The Verdict
Best Nashville Bluegrass Venue: Why the Station Inn Earns the Title
The Gulch has transformed into one of Nashville’s glossiest neighborhoods, but step inside the Station Inn and it still feels like old Nashville. There’s a bar, a stage, rows of tables, and walls lined with decades of photos and posters. Frommer’s has called it one of the best bluegrass venues around, and it’s known worldwide as a place where the stars are often in the audience as well as on the stage.
The music is the whole point. Legends have performed here, award-winning bands have formed here, and on any given night a bluegrass hero might drop in to listen or jam. It’s the beating heart of the Nashville bluegrass community that virtuosos like banjo great Béla Fleck, our Best Instrumentalist, champion. Most shows are first come, first served, so arrive early, grab a seat, and settle in for a night of world-class picking in a room that takes its music seriously.

The Story
Forever Bluegrass
The Station Inn opened in 1974 in a small spot near Centennial Park and Vanderbilt, founded by a group of bluegrass pickers and singers who wanted a place in the city to get together and jam. In 1978 it moved to its current home at 402 12th Avenue South, then a quiet block of old industrial buildings near the railroad.
Decades later, the Gulch has grown up around it into a neighborhood of sleek towers, luxury hotels, and boutiques. Yet the little one-story stone building remains, still hosting nightly shows and still honoring its founding mission: keeping bluegrass and roots music alive in the city where the genre was born, on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium in 1945.
“Cold beer, hot pickin’ and friends you won’t meet until you get here.”
