Nashville Best Of 2026 · Best Nashville Songwriter Venue
The Bluebird Cafe
Tucked into a Green Hills strip mall, this tiny room with fewer than 20 tables is where Garth Brooks got his start and a 15-year-old Taylor Swift was discovered. The Bluebird Cafe is our pick for the best songwriter venue in Nashville.
The Verdict
Best Nashville Songwriter Venue: Why the Bluebird Earns the Title
Nashville runs on songs, and the Bluebird is where you hear them straight from the people who wrote them. In its signature in-the-round shows, songwriters sit together in the center of the room, trading songs and stories and accompanying one another. You might hear the story behind a No. 1 hit from the person who wrote it, just a few feet from your seat.
It’s also a true listening room. The famous Shhh! policy keeps the crowd quiet during performances, so every lyric lands. Owned since 2008 by the Nashville Songwriters Association International, a nonprofit devoted to songwriters, the Bluebird has launched careers, starred on ABC’s Nashville, and remains the most coveted small stage in Music City.

The Story
The Little Room That Launched Big Careers
Amy Kurland opened the Bluebird Cafe in June 1982 as a restaurant far from Music Row that occasionally offered live music. Within a year it had become the go-to stage for songwriters, and on March 29, 1985, it hosted its first in-the-round show, the format that would make it famous.
Garth Brooks got his start here in 1987, and years later a 15-year-old Taylor Swift played a show that led Scott Borchetta to invite her to his new label, Big Machine. In 2008, Kurland sold the Bluebird to the Nashville Songwriters Association International, more of a donation than a sale, to keep its songwriter mission alive.
“Educate, elevate and celebrate songwriters.”
