The Verdict

Best Nashville Rock Club: Why the Beast Earns the Title

Nashville may be Music City, but it isn’t only country. The Basement East is the heart of the city’s rock and indie scene, a room big enough for nationally touring acts yet small enough that every show feels personal. Its stage has hosted everyone from Kris Kristofferson and John Prine to Beck, Alice Cooper, Brandi Carlile, and Cage the Elephant.

It’s also a symbol of Nashville’s resilience. When a tornado destroyed much of the building in March 2020, the “I Believe in Nashville” mural on its wall survived untouched and became an emblem of a city determined to rebuild. The Beast came back with upgraded sound and lighting, and it’s still run by the same local music lifers who built it.

The Story

Built by Music Lifers, Rebuilt by a City

The Basement East opened in 2015 as the bigger sister to The Basement, the tiny club on 8th Avenue South next to Grimey’s record store. Owners Mike Grimes and Dave Brown, whose ties to the Nashville music scene go back to the 1990s, built it as the next step for artists who had outgrown the smaller room.

In the early hours of March 3, 2020, an EF-3 tornado ripped off the roof and brought down walls. Staff on site sheltered in the basement and everyone inside survived, and the wall still standing carried the “I Believe in Nashville” mural. After a long rebuild, the Beast reopened in 2021 and has been rocking ever since.

“Very symbolic of the town’s resolve and resiliency.”
